Some years in the late fall, when conditions are just right, after weeks of freezing temperatures and no snow, many of the higher lakes in the Lakes Basin become natural (and gorgeous) skating rinks—popular with some locals for hockey games. Be sure you know and understand conditions, take all safety precautions and always bring a buddy. For manmade ice try the Mammoth Ice Rink (760-934-2505), adjacent to the Mammoth Lakes Library. Drop-in hockey sessions, lessons, skate rentals and sharpening are available.
