Smokey Bear Flat

  • A dry, pumice-flat meadow on the east side of Highway 395, just north of the Mammoth Lakes exit, Smokey Bear Flat is a popular year-round staging area for OHV and snowmobile enthusiasts, with access to hundreds of miles of trails and backcountry roads through a landscape of sage, rabbitbrush and old-growth Jeffrey pines. In winter, the snowmobile-packed trails - many of which are maintained by on-site private OSV outfit DJ’s Snowmobile Adventures - are often used by dogsled teams and skijorers. There’s also a popular sledding and snowplay area located here.
