The L Trail, part of the Winter Grooming Snowmobile system for over-snow vehicle (OSV)/snowmobile use, is a popular short loop around the base of 8,352-foot Lookout Mountain to the east of Hwy 395. Groomed and marked with orange diamonds, the trail begins and ends at its junctions with the A Trail to the east of Hwy 395. Near the southern junction, a marked but ungroomed trail climbs US Forest Service Road 2S02 to the summit for grand, 360-degree views across the volcanic landscape of the Long Valley Caldera to the Sierra Nevada and the Glass Mountains. The Winter Grooming Snowmobile System is groomed by the U.S. Forest Service with funding provided by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, using monies generated by registration fees and gasoline taxes. Click here for current snowmobile grooming info.
