From a dirt turnout on upper Old Mammoth Road, at the gravesite of a Mrs. Julia Townsend (who died in the winter of 1882 at the age of 34, shot “accidentally” by her husband), this short, easy trail leads into the woods past several contemporary summer recreation cabins. After crossing a small creek, the old terraced cabin sites of gold-rush era Mill City become evident, though nothing remains of the buildings themselves. Further along, the trail ends at the foundations and massive iron flywheel of the original 20-stamp mill once used to crush ore from the mines up at Mammoth Rock and the base of Red Mountain. Many archaeological and historic sites exist throughout the Inyo National Forest and on adjacent federal and state lands. These sites are special places that contain irreplaceable information of our past and are protected by law. Please take only photographs, leave only footprints, and report vandalism.
